A home inspector can use a AFCI tester with a "trip" button on a AFCI circuit to test either the AFCI Circuit Breaker or AFCI Receptacle.

Pressing the test and reset button is also an acceptable way to test the device; it automatically tests the AFCI every time it is pressed. The AFCI will not reset if the circuit is not functioning properly or if the device is malfunctioning.
